Online Talk: The Mystery of the Unsolved Murder of Pamela Werner

On the morning of January 8 1937 a mutilated body was found close to the south eastern corner of the inner city wall in Beijing. The body would soon be confirmed as Pamela Werner, the daughter of the former consul [British Consul-General in Foochow] E.T.C Werner.

That is in short pretty much all that the two authors Paul French and Graeme Sheppard can agree upon. In their separate investigations into the murder case they came up with very different conclusions looking at the same material.

“The unsolved murder of Pamela Werner” compares the arguments of the authors: Where was the body found? Where was Pamela Werner buried? Was her father a reliable witness?  Why was she killed? We will present the primary sources and give you a chance to judge for yourself.

A murder case is an amazing tool to use when trying understand a certain time period. In the process of looking into the  murder investigation we will also get a peek in to the workings of Beijing society in the 1930s.
