Midnight in Peking

  • Beijing Postcards Beijing Postcards, No. 97 Yangmeizhu Byway, Xicheng District Beijing China (map)

A young girl's grisly murder in 1937 shocked the world and made headlines around the globe. But as Beijing teetered on the edge of war with Japan, her death - and the search for her killer - were soon forgotten.

During this nighttime walking tour, the cast of characters revealed by the author Paul French will be revived once more – from Werner to DCI Dennis, Prentice to Pinfold – now seen from a different perspective thanks to the documents uncovered in the National Archives.

Fascinating details woven into the narrative will put the era in context for history buffs, and quirky newspaper cuttings from the time shed further light on this strange time in Beijing’s history. One article from the period even claims that scientists planned to find Pamela’s killer by extracting the last image burned onto her retina before she died…

The walk ends with an exhibition of the source material that Beijing Postcards team discovered in the National Archives, along with historic maps, and a cocktail at historic Hotel Nuo overlooking Tiananmen, and a portion from every ticket sold will go to Equality, a charity helping female victims of domestic violence in China.
