Why Beijing? With such a limited access to water and a general lack of natural resources, who in their right mind would ever place a capital here? "Looking for the Master Plan" is a crash course in Beijing's urban development. The talk takes on more than 2000 years of Beijing history and tries to answer why the capital was placed here on the Huabei plain. We will discuss how politics, trade, geography and defence all had a say in making Beijing the capital of China. In the talk we will utilize original maps from the Beijing Postcards collection, creating a comprehensive answer to the complicated mixture of circumstances that made Beijing the Northern Capital.
