Disoriented in the Orient - A Scavenger Hunt in the Old Dashilar Neighborhood

  • Beijing Postcards Beijing Postcards, No. 97 Yangmeizhu Byway, Xicheng District Beijing China (map)

Navigate through the multi-layered history of Beijing and take part in a scavenger hunt on the doorstep of the old city.

In the Hutong maze of Dashilar, you will meet local residents that all have a story to tell. Some of them have family roots in the area that date all the way back to the Ming dynasty, 400 years ago.

Take in your surroundings as you hunt for clues. Pay attention as you pass by Republican brothels, Communist factory halls, Qing dynasty mansions, and Beijing’s first stock exchange.

Walk in the footsteps of warlords, red guards, Imperial officials and prostitutes with tiny lily feet to explore the old cultural melting pot of the Dashilar district.

You will engage with various first hand sources, collected as part of Beijing Postcards’ ongoing research projects, to help you find your way. You don’t need to have a lot of prior knowledge of Chinese history or Chinese language skills to take part, but the clock will be ticking as you desperately try to make sense of it all...
